📅 July 2025
You don’t have to rough it to enjoy the outdoors. I used to think camping meant unplugging completely. After plenty of trips with (and without) tech, I realized smart gear doesn’t ruin the outdoor vibe. It makes it better. This list skips the obvious stuff like lanterns, sleeping bags, and cookware since you’ve probably got those handled, and focuses on the smarter extras that actually improve the experience.
FiliTech is an ad-free site. I don’t run pop-ups or banner ads because I want this space to be clean, honest, and focused on helpful recommendations. Some posts may contain affiliate links, which means I may earn a small commission if you buy through them—always at no extra cost to you. I only recommend products I’ve personally used, trust, or genuinely believe will provide value to you.
Whether you’re a traditional camper or lean toward the “glamping” style experience, these 10 tools are practical upgrades that make outdoor trips easier and more enjoyable. Have a favorite camping gadget I missed? Let me know. I’m always testing new gear and updating my recommendations.
The best camping gear doesn’t replace nature — it helps you stay in it longer, safer, and smarter.
1. Anker SOLIX C300 Portable Power Station
You probably already have a power bank, and that’s great. But the Anker SOLIX C300 is on another level. Sure, it can charge your everyday devices, but it’s built for much more. Alongside USB-C and USB-A ports, it features three AC outlets, making it a legit portable power station for outdoor trips and camping. It keeps your essentials charged without draining your car battery or hunting for outlets. Perfect for phones, fans, lights, or even a small cooler. Compact enough to pack easily, powerful enough to keep everything running. Plus, it recharges fast and supports solar charging, so you’re never stuck waiting to power up. Whether you’re camping, tailgating, or just spending the weekend outdoors, it’s peace of mind in a box.
✅ Great for: Staying charged and comfortable without the hassle of finding outlets.
2. Nitecore NU30 Rechargeable Headlamp (500 Lumens)
Everyone knows to pack a flashlight, but a headlamp makes life much easier. Honestly, any headlamp can get the job done, but I’ve been using the Nitecore NU30 and it’s quickly become one of those “small upgrade, big difference” pieces of gear.
Although this headlamp is a fairly new addition to my arsenal, it’s the kind of thing I never think twice about packing because it always gets its use. Whether I’m setting up a tent after dark, grabbing something from the car, or making coffee before sunrise, having reliable, hands-free lighting just makes these moments much less frustrating. It’s bright enough when you need it and the battery lasts forever on low mode.
✅ Great for: Hands-free lighting you’ll actually enjoy using, especially after dark around camp.
3. Anker SOLIX PS30 Solar Panel
If you’re not harnessing solar power, you’re missing out on one of the simplest ways to stay charged outdoors. The Anker SOLIX PS30 Solar Panel is the entry-level option in the SOLIX lineup, offering up to 30W of output. It features both USB-A and USB-C ports, making it easy to charge essential devices like smartphones and tablets. Plus, it folds down to about the size of a tablet, so it’s easy to pack.
If you want something more capable, consider the PS100. It offers more power and pairs well with the C300 Power Station I mentioned earlier, or with any SOLIX power station, making it a better option for charging larger devices or multiple gadgets at once.
✅ Best for: Backpacking, multi-day trips, or charging power banks during the day.
4. JisuLife Life7 Portable Fan
JisuLife is one of the top brands I recommend for portable fans, and it’s a game-changer in hot climates. The JisuLife Life7 Fan is compact, rechargeable, and lasts a little under 20 hours on a full charge. Strap it around your neck when you’re hiking or outside the campgrounds. Use it as a tabletop fan (thanks to its folding design) when you’re at the picnic table. Keep it in your tent to keep you cooler overnight. It’s truly a fan for all kinds of activities.
I actually feature the JisuLife Life9 (a more compact model) on my blog 7 Tech Essentials That Make Travel Easier (and Smarter). Check out why I recommend the Life9 for all-around travel!
✅ Tip: Use a carabiner to hang it from your tent ceiling for airflow.
5. Garmin inReach Mini 2 (Satellite GPS + SOS)
The Garmin inReach Mini 2 is one of those gadgets you hope you’ll never need, but you’ll be glad you have. It gives you reliable GPS tracking, two-way messaging, and an emergency SOS button, even when you’re miles away from cell service. Whether you’re hiking in remote backcountry trails, camping in national parks, or road-tripping through patchy signal zones, it keeps you connected to family and emergency services.
It’s compact enough to clip to your backpack, barely takes up space, and runs for days without needing a recharge. You can share your location in real time, message loved ones to check in, or call for help in an emergency.
✅ Heads-up: It’s a bit of an investment compared to other outdoor gadgets, but it’s one of those “buy once, thank yourself later” purchases, especially if you like to get off the grid.
6. Tile Mate or Apple AirTag (Gear Trackers)
Losing gear at a campsite happens more often than you’d expect. Toss a Tile Mate or AirTag in your backpack, cooler, or camera bag and relax. These little trackers give you quick peace of mind, whether it’s checking that your gear is still nearby or quickly tracking down a misplaced cooler after a group cookout. It’s also useful for spotting gear thieves quickly at crowded campgrounds.
These trackers are also featured on my blog 7 Tech Essentials That Make Travel Easier (and Smarter). See how I use them to make travel less of a headache.
✅ Choose AirTag for iOS, Tile for Android or SOS button support.
7. LuminAID Solar Camping Lantern
I know I said no lanterns, but hear me out. We got this to be used for emergencies only, but we’ve come to use it as part of our main sources of light for camping. The LuminAID Solar Lantern is a lightweight, inflatable light that’s perfect for camping, hiking, or emergencies. It charges via built-in solar panel or USB, so you’re never stuck without light. Once inflated, it provides bright, 360-degree light for your tent, picnic table, or emergency kit.
It’s waterproof, shatterproof, and packs completely flat, making it one of the most space-efficient lighting options for outdoor trips. No batteries to worry about, just a reliable light that works anywhere.
✅ Great for: Off-grid trips, tent lighting, and emergency backups.
8. Soundcore Boom 2 Outdoor Speaker
Not too big to be obnoxious, and not too small to deliver real sound. If you want music at your campsite, beach, or picnic table, the Soundcore Boom 2 Outdoor Speaker delivers at an affordable price. It’s rugged, waterproof (IPX7), and offers up to 24 hours of battery life. Save the audiophile-level speakers for your home theater, you’re out camping! It floats in water too, so there’s that.
✅ Great for: Group camping, solo sunset soundtracks, or beach days.
9. Ninja ProChef Wireless Meat Thermometer
I’ve always disregarded tech-infused meat thermometers, but I can’t tell you how many times I’ve messed up a good ribeye. I’m a decent cook, but I’m no grill master. The Ninja ProChef Thermometer takes the guesswork out of the equation and lets you focus on other things without worrying about overcooking your steak (or any type of meat, really).
It uses a wireless Bluetooth probe and an app to track your meat’s internal temperature in real time. Just select your food type, set your doneness, and it alerts you when it’s ready. It’s waterproof, flare-up resistant, and works with any heat source, grill, oven, smoker, or fire pit. Long battery life and accurate readings make it ideal for outdoor cooking where reliability matters.
✅ Why it’s smart: Lets you multitask at camp without ruining dinner.
10. TP-Link AX1800 Travel Wi-Fi 6 Router
For campgrounds or cabins with unreliable Wi-Fi, this tiny router creates a secure, stable, private connection. The TP-Link AX1800 is perfect for sharing a single connection across all your devices, working remotely, or protecting logins. Is it absolutely necessary? Maybe not. Is it something I always pack? Without question. As someone who values privacy on the road, this little router comes with me every time.
This travel router is also featured on my blog post 7 Tech Essentials That Make Travel Easier (and Smarter), see how it makes the cut as one of my travel must-haves! PS: It’s a bonus for cruise goers.
✅ Not necessary off-grid, but perfect for campgrounds or digital nomads.
🏕️ Final Thoughts
Whether you camp once a month, or once a year, tech shouldn’t get in the way of your outdoor experience, it should support it. Everything on this list is compact, practical, and tested. You don’t need to bring it all, but even one or two smart additions can make a huge difference in comfort, safety, and convenience. Have fun, stay safe, and happy camping!
